Artificial EYE

                                  Artificial Eye

Smart pupil contracts in UK artificial eye

Researchers at Nottingham Trent University have created an artificial eye with a cosmetic pupil that can dilate and contract in response to light.
This artificial eye aims to solve the problem of eye that is different sized pupil at night or bright sunlight.

The artificial pupil is a dielectric elastomer (A natural or synthetic polymer having elastic properties) actuator made from a soft silicon disc with stretchable carbon electrode on each side. Applying a voltage across the electrodes cause electrostatic force with squashes the disc making it thinner and wider.
An oversized prototype eye took 1.5kv to 660𝞵A.
This prototype is made from acrylic resin and powered by a battery; it includes a light sensor and controller to calculate how much power needed to achieve the appropriate size pupil.

Note: The pupil is a hole located in the center of the iris of the eye that allows light to enter the retina… now you can match the artificial eye concept with the function of pupil you can get some idea about  artificial eye..
